Practical Matters

Project Overview

Practical Matters is an open source, multimedia, academic journal that critically engages the nexus of practical theology and religious practices.

We seek to foster conversation among religious studies scholars, practical theologians, and religious practitioners by publishing compelling and innovative articles and mixed media projects around diverse themes such as journey, imagination, ethnography, and violence. In doing so, we have built an uncommon academic space where religious practitioners and scholars can engage in robust dialogue around all aspects of practice, pedagogy, and scholarship.

Pushing the boundaries of both the study of religious practices and the discipline of practical theology, Practical Matters publishes a variety of media and genres, illuminating each of these areas and drawing connections between them.

Practical Matters accepts submissions for both peer-review and non peer-review from academics and practitioners. We publish each article on our website and in our annual issue, in which featured articles focus on a broad theme. Practical Matters publishes work in five categories:

  • Feature Matters: Content from scholars and practitioners around a defined annual theme
  • Analyzing Matters: Pieces, usually peer-reviewed, by scholars exploring topics related to religious practices and practical theology
  • Practicing Matters: Content from practitioners and activists
  • Teaching Matters: Content on pedagogy and practice
  • Matters Under Review: Reviews of recent works relevant to religious practices and practical theology

Members of the Practical Matters staff oversee the selection and publication of all peer-reviewed work, as well as work that is not peer-reviewed.

Key Contributions

ECDS projects advance Emory University's mission through research, pedagogy, publishing, and public scholarship.

Research Practical Matters publishes peer-reviewed articles and reviews from scholars across the fields of religious studies and theology that engage with the scholarly conversations around practical theology and religious practices.
Pedagogy The journal's internal staff are graduate students who run every aspect of the journal from submissions, to managing peer-review, to layout and publishing. Graduate students gain valuable expertise in running an online journal.

The journal models open access, peer-reviewed digital publishing.

Public Scholarship Practical Matters seeks to engage the academic community, religious practitioners, and the broader public.
